Gerry Shepherd, president of NRCA member Oklahoma Roofing and Sheet Metal, is interviewed in this Oklahoma National Guard video about his work with the third annual Horseback Heroes program, which took place Saturday, Oct. 18, at his Covey Creek Ranch. This year, the event doubled in size, and 163 children of deployed Oklahoma soldiers had the rare opportunity to spend the day on a working farm, taking part in activities including horseback riding, cattle roping, and tack and grooming.
In February, Oklahoma Roofing and Sheet Metal won NRCA’s 2014 CNA/NRCA Community Involvement Award for its contributions to Horseback Heroes and received a $5,000 donation from CNA for the Oklahoma 4-H Foundation, which co-sponsors the program.
The donation enabled Horseback Heroes to accommodate the dramatic increase in children who registered for the program, allowing organizers to stick to their goal to never turn a child away from participating.
Shepherd and the Oklahoma National Guard are hoping to grow the Horseback Heroes program to accommodate children of deployed soldiers from other states in the coming years.
