Hunger is an invisible foe affecting the Manhattan, Kan., community and shows no regard for age.
Fortunately, the Flint Hills Breadbasket has dedicated professionals and volunteers taking a stand against hunger. They provide food staples to those in need, and have been doing so for 33 years. Their mission is to ensure no one goes hungry. They help more than 25,000 individuals in addition to the nearly 200 “backsnacks” that are delivered to children when school is in session and more than 200 Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets distributed in 2014.
In May 2015, NRCA member Danker Roofing , Manhattan, participated in Project Manhattan for the Flint Hills Breadbasket. During the summer months when school is out, children of low-income families do not receive free or reduced cost meals. Project Manhattan raises the funds and food necessary to help struggling families feed their children. Danker Roofing has been participating in the campaign for 10 years.
Employees were asked to bring in nonperishable food items to donate to the food pantry. The employee who brought in the most items each week received $10, and the overall winner for the month received a $25 gift certificate from Danker Roofing. They collected more than 200 pounds of food throughout that month and contributed $300 in cash donations.
This was the 20th year Project Manhattan has benefited the Flint Hills Breadbasket. It is a month long project held each year during in May. Area businesses and organizations compete with each other to collect the most food and cash donations for the Flint Hills Breadbasket.
